別科コース上級クラスのレイチェルさん（スコットランド出身）にインタビューしました。
Q：どうしてＹＷＣＡで日本語を勉強しようと思いましたか。／Why did you decide to study Japanese at the YWCA?
A：今住んでいる家や職場からとても近いからです。もともとは、オンライン見つけたボランティアの先生と、カフェなどで日本語の会話をしていました。でも、もっときちんと勉強したいと思うようになって、文法や書くことなども総合的に勉強できる学校に行こうと思いました。YWCAは、授業が週２回なので、仕事と両立するにはちょうどよいスケジュールだったことも理由です。
I decided to study here because it is close to my home and work. Originally, I only studied conversational Japanese with a volunteer teacher I found online, but then I decided I wanted to study more properly, and I thought this school would allow me to study grammar, writing, etc. in a comprehensive way. Also, classes are held twice a week, so the schedule was perfect for me to balance work and school.
Q：今のクラスはどうですか。／How is your current class?
A：文法や読み・書きだけでなく、敬語なども学べるのがとてもいいです。他の生徒とロールプレイで練習できるなど、1人ではできない日本語を “使う” 練習ができるのもうれしいです。楽しい雰囲気で学べます。
It is great to learn not only grammar, reading and writing, but also KEIGO (honorific speech). I am glad that I can practice using Japanese in role-plays with other students, which I cannot do alone. I am able to learn in a fun atmosphere.
初めてこの学校へ来た時、日本語で短い文や基本的なフレーズしか話せませんでした。でも今は、例えば電車の切符を買うなど、日常生活の中でわからないことがあっても、困ることなく尋ねることができます。また英語を話さない友人ができたこともうれしいことです。
When I first came to this school, I could only use some short sentences and basic phrases in Japanese. But now, when I don’t understand something in daily life, such as buying a train ticket, I can ask without any trouble. I am also happy that I have made friends who do not speak English.
Q：日本語を学んで、これからどんなことをやっていきたいですか。／What do you want to do in the future after learning Japanese?
A：これからも日本で暮らす予定なので、日常生活でもっと友人を増やしたいです。今は英語教師をしており、職場では英語しか使いません。これから仕事の幅を増やすためにも、日本語の勉強を続け、来年は日本語能力検定試験にも挑戦したいと思っています。
Since I plan to continue living in Japan, I would like to make more friends here in my daily life. I am currently an English teacher and use only English at my workplace, so I would like to continue studying Japanese in order to increase the scope of my work, and I would like to take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test next year.
